How to Manage Frozen Shoulder Effectively

In Part 1, we looked at what frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is and how it progresses through the freezing, frozen and thawing phases.

In this video, Steph — HCPC-registered advanced MSK practitioner at Dunham Physio — shares a brief overview of management options to support recovery.

Frozen shoulder can be a long journey, but the right approach can reduce pain, improve mobility and keep you moving through each stage safely.

Treatment Options for Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder management focuses on pain control, maintaining movement, and rebuilding mobility as the shoulder progresses through its phases.

Here are common approaches:

Physiotherapy (Recommended First-Line Treatment)

At Dunham Physio, treatment may include:

  • Gentle range of motion exercises

  • Joint mobilisation (as tolerated)

  • Targeted stretches

  • Activity modifications to reduce aggravation

Physiotherapy is tailored to your pain level and the phase of the condition.

Education & Self-Management

Understanding how frozen shoulder behaves is key — pushing too hard during early stages can worsen symptoms. Steph will guide you in:

  • Knowing when to move

  • Knowing when to rest

  • Pacing activities wisely

Medical Management (if required)

For some patients, medical interventions may support recovery, especially during painful phases:

  • Corticosteroid injections

  • Hydrodilatation

  • GP-supported pain relief

Steph can advise whether these options are appropriate and, if needed, signpost you to the right onward care.

Strengthening During the Thawing Phase

As movement gradually returns, strengthening exercises are introduced to restore shoulder function, improve control and prevent recurrence.

When Should You Seek Help?

✅ Pain is interfering with sleep

✅ Your shoulder movement is gradually decreasing

✅ Everyday tasks (coat on, reaching overhead) are difficult

✅ It’s been more than 6–8 weeks with no improvement

Early assessment can shorten recovery time and prevent further stiffness.
